This blog was very informative about about the jail complex Rikers Island. It told of the history of Rikers Island and where the name originated from.I thought it was imperative to know about Rikers Island because i know plenty of people who end up there. Kadeem
This podcast was very informative. It talked about the history of Riker's Island and learned two things. I learned that the island was owned by a rich Dutch real estate investor. i also learned that the entire island is dedicated to the jail.
I never thought that there would be so much history behind a prison that holds over a thousands kids, elderly, men and women. All placed on the same island but in different compartments as if it is a maze. This podcast gave me a better incite on the subject.
Rikers Island was at one time a landfill. Was used to hold confederate soldiers during the civil war. Rikers island was at one time owned by the Dutch. Peter Stuyvesant was once an owner of the island. Rikers island has ten jails inside of it.
Rikers Island is the world's largest penal colony. Over 130,000,000,000 people enter there each year. There are 10 different jails there.
I found the blog to be rather informitive. It provided be with information about New York that I didn't know prior to listening to the broard cast. Although didn't anything about the history of the jail and ultimatley how the island went from being a bar where illegal boxing took place, to a traing camp for the union army during the civil war,and finally to a jail it was still informative and i enjoyed it. Dispite it almost boring me to sleep.
Rikers Island has about ten different jails in over on that land. 130,000,000,000 people enter there each year. this was a interesting podcast.
the podcast was interesting. Rikers island was found by a dutch man. I am pretty such he got money band i know it hold many prisoner.
I learned in this podcast that Rikers Island was owned by a successful Dutch real estate investor named Abraham Ryciken. Peter Stuyvesant was the last Dutch Director General of the colony of New Netherlands. In this podcast I also learned that the British overtook the island from the Dutch and claimed it as New York.Salvador Dolly, a famous artist, made a sketch of one of his famous paintings and gave it to Rikers, because he couldn't make the meeting that was setup at Rikers island. This painting was later stolen by some Corrections Officers. The Civil has to do with Rikers island because that is were they placed prisoners from the war.
One thing i learned was that the island was named after Abraham Rycken.He was a wealthy dutch land owner. I also learned that they used the island to house prisoners during the Civil War.Finally, i learned that in 1884 that island was sold to New York City for 180,000 dollars.
I learned many new things about Riker's island that i never knew. One of the 3 new things i learned was why was it called riker's island. I thought it was just a named for the meaning of prison. Another thing i learned was how did it become a prison if it was originally a farm. I learned later on that the state of new york used it for garbage and made prison on it.The last thing i learned was who Salvador Dalí was a famous drawing who was supposed to go to rikers until he got sick. To repay for his absence he drew a picture for the lobby of rikers. The picture was soon stolen by guards who got caught. The painting was never found.

In later generation. Rickers island is actually for minor crimes and the only time youll stay long enough on the island is because you work there.

The corrections officers were not smart when they stole the painting because they made a really crappy sketch thinking it would look like the real one. Also, they didn’t frame it and they stapled it to the wall. The painting was never found. The Civil war is associated with Rikers because the prisoners from the war were kept there.
I enjoyed the blog and it showed that we really dont kno much about our own city. I learned that a family owned Rikers Island for 201 years before it was sold to others
